Smart Contract
Self-executing code on the blockchain. On TRON, running contract code costs Energy — and a USDT transfer is a call to the token's smart contract.
A smart contract is a program stored on-chain that runs exactly as written. Token standards like TRC20 are implemented as smart contracts.
Every contract call on TRON consumes Energy proportional to the work it does. That's why USDT transfers need Energy while a plain TRX transfer doesn't — and why the same rented Energy also works for other tokens and contract interactions.
