If you send USDT on TRON regularly, you've probably noticed the "fee" isn't always the same. One day a transfer costs a few TRX, another day more. The reason is the TRON Energy price — and understanding it helps you keep costs down.

What the Energy price actually is

Every USDT (TRC20) transfer consumes Energy. If your wallet has none, the network converts your TRX into Energy at a fixed rate called the energy price, measured in sun (1 TRX = 1,000,000 sun).

The formula is simple:

TRX burned = Energy needed × energy price

A typical transfer needs about 65,000 Energy. So if the energy price is 100 sun, that's 65,000 × 100 = 6,500,000 sun = 6.5 TRX burned.

Why it changes

Two things move your real cost:

  1. The energy price parameter. TRON governance can raise or lower it through on-chain votes. When it was higher, the same transfer burned far more TRX; when it drops, burns get cheaper.
  2. The recipient. Sending to an address that has never held USDT costs roughly double the Energy (~131,000), because the contract has to create a new record for it.

So the same "send USDT" action can cost very different amounts depending on the network parameter and who you're paying.

How to stop overpaying

The Energy price only matters when you burn TRX. Rent the Energy instead and you sidestep the burn entirely — you pay a small, predictable rental cost and delegate the exact Energy your transfer needs.

  1. Pick 65,000 (or 131,000 for a new recipient).
  2. Pay the exact amount shown.
  3. Energy is delegated automatically — then send your USDT.
